Falko Schmidt is presenting the latest research findings on self-organized colloidal system using critical phenomena and light at the Artifical and living matter workshop in Erice Italy.
The workshop takes places between the 26th of June and 1st of July 2022 at Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture in the medieval town of Erice in Sicily, Italy.
Many thanks to the collaborative research center 910 at TU Berlin, especially Holger Stark and co-organizer for supporting me financially to participate in this workshop.

Abstract:
Active matter comprises self-driven units that can spontaneously form complex patterns and assemble into functional microdevices. Here, we show that under light-illumination, colloidal particles and their near-critical environment create mutually-coupled co-evolving structures featuring a droplet shape and a colloidal engine. We call them active droploids—a portmanteau of droplet and colloids.
